Learning the Faith by Heart

Speaking, Praying, and Singing God’s Word Together

The Week of August 30 – September 6

Preparing for the Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Hymn of the Week: My Soul, Now Praise Your Maker (820)

GLCA Learn by Heart Hymn: The Gifts Christ Freely Gives (602:4)

GLCA Catechism Memory: What is Baptism?

Bible Verse Memory (Grade 3 +): “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”  – Matthew 28:19-20

Monday: Catechism Bible Story – 1 Samuel 3:1-10  Whenever the Bible is being read to us, God is speaking. But are we like Samuel and listening? Or do we put our earbuds in and tune Him out? Do we think about other things while God’s Word is being read or are we really listening to hear what God says? – LCMS School Ministry: Rooted in Christ Chapel Talks, pg. 17

Tuesday: Old Testament – Ezekiel 33:7-9

For what purpose does the Lord send the watchman to His people (vs. 8)? What happens when God’s people despise His Word?

Wednesday: Learning from the Saints – Hannah (1 Samuel 1)        Hannah’s story encourages us to reflect upon God’s answers to our prayers. Even when Hannah was not receiving what she prayed for, where did she keep returning? Answer: to God’s house! Sometimes, God does not answer our prayers when or how we wish He would. How does Hannah’s faith and God’s mercy encourage us in our prayers?

Thursday: Holy Gospel – Matthew 18:1-20

True greatness is not self-sufficient strength, but humility like that of a little child. One way the devil tempts us to despise preaching and God’s Word is to convince us that we’ve “’grown out of it”. How are children an example of gladly hearing and learning God’s Word?

Friday: Prep for Confession & Absolution According to the 3rd Commandment

My God has given me His Word that I might know Him and believe in Him. His Word makes me holy. He graciously invites to come to Him and receive rest for my soul in the preaching of His Word and the reception of His Body and Blood for my forgiveness (His visible Word). Am I lazy and bored with the Word of God? Do I think I’ve outgrown it? Do I love my fellow Christians by being present with them in the divine Liturgy to encourage them?
