Learning the Faith by Heart

Speaking, Praying, and Singing God’s Word Together

The Week of Oct 5 – Oct 12, 2025

Preparing for the Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Hymn of the Week: Your Hand, O Lord, in Days of Old (846)

GLCA Learn by Heart Hymn: N/A (Fall Break)

GLCA Catechism Memory: N/A (Fall Break)

Bible Verse Memory: “The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself.” – 2 Timothy 2:11-13

Collect of the Day for this coming Sunday: Almighty God, You show mercy to Your people in all their troubles. Grant us always to recognize Your goodness, give thanks for Your compassion, and praise Your holy name; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Monday: Your Hand, O Lord, in Days of Old (LSB 846)

This hymn’s second stanza calls to mind healings Jesus performed in His day: “Your touch then, Lord, brought life and health.” It also implores Him to act in our day, saying, “And now, O Lord, be near to bless, / Almighty as before.” How is Jesus “near to bless” today? How does Jesus come to “crowded street, by beds of pain” today?

Tuesday: Old Testament – Ruth 1:1–19a

In what ways are Christians like Ruth? Where does the Lord “visit His people and give them food,” today?

Wednesday: Epistle – 2 Timothy 2:1–13

Read vs. 13. What reason does Paul give for Jesus’ faithfulness to us, even “if we are faithless”?

Thursday: Commemoration of Abraham – Genesis 12:1-3

What was Abraham’s original name? What title did God promise Abraham when He gave him a new name? What is Abraham’s first wife’s name? Was Abraham perfect? In what ways did Abraham fail to trust God? What was Abraham asked to do that foreshadowed what God would do for the whole world? – Family Lectionary, pg. 276

Friday: Holy Gospel – Luke 17:11–19

Jesus comes in mercy and, by His Word, heals you in body and soul. “Go and show yourselves to the priests,” for you are cleansed (Luke 17:14), and you are granted access to the Lord’s temple. It is “at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks” (Luke 17:16), that you worship God, for Christ Jesus is your great High Priest; His body is the true temple. At which points of the Divine Service do we give thanks to Jesus?
