| What is the Second Commandment You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. | Preschool + |
| What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not curse, swear, use satanic arts, lie, or deceive by His name, but call upon it in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks. | Second Grade + |
Bible Verse Memory: “You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.” – Leviticus 19:12
Monday: Catechism Bible Story – God Gives Us His Name (Exodus 3:13-15)
God gave us His name so we could know who created us and redeems us and guides us and so that we could call on Him in prayer and so that we could tell others about Him. Read Luke 11:2. How does Jesus teach us to address God? Read Isaiah 44:24. What does God tell us about Himself? Give an example of how someone might use God’s name disrespectfully. Give an example of using God’s name in a good way.
Tuesday: Epistle – Hebrews 13:1-17
Read vs. 15. What is the “fruit of lips that acknowledge his name”? What is a “sacrifice of praise”? God’s forgiveness “in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” leads us to thank Him and praise His name, telling everyone what He has done.
Wednesday: Holy Gospel – Luke 14:1-14
Read vs. 11. What does it mean to “exult” yourself? What happens to those who do this? What happens to those who humble themselves? Our hope is in the name of the Lord, who humbled Himself unto death on the cross and was exalted in His resurrection. How does Jesus’ cross humble us?
Thursday: Commemoration of St. Augustine, Pastor and Theologian
Augustine was a very smart man who lived in North Africa in the 4th century. He was interested in learning and becoming famous. He became a teacher and traveled to different cities. However, he was never satisfied by all of his learning. He realized He needed something more than just knowledge and fame. He realized this by reading his Bible. God humbled Augustine with His Word. How does God’s Word humble you?
Friday: The Martyrdom of St. John, the Baptist – Mark 6:14-29
Some people believe that once a person becomes a Christian, all problems disappear. Holy Scripture paints a much different picture. Through their trials the patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and others clung to the promises of God, knowing that He would deliver them eternally. As we cling to God’s promises in Christ, we too receive strength, protection, and comfort. Jesus sanctified our suffering by entering into it when He took on our flesh. Now He uses it to draw us closer to Himself. What is the cause of all suffering? What is the cause of John the Baptist’s suffering? – LCMS Worship Hymn of the Day Bible Study, 55.
