Bible Verse Memory: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” –  Proverbs 3:5-6

Monday: Catechism Bible Story – God Gives the Law (Ex 20)

God describes Himself as “jealous.” This means He wants you to love and trust in Him alone. Who loved God perfectly so that you can enjoy God’s steadfast love forever? Moses was an advocate (someone who pleads for others, like a lawyer) for the people before God. Who is your Advocate before God? – 120 Bible Stories, pg. 161

Tuesday – Commemoration of Bernard of Clairvaux, Hymnwriter and Theologian

Bernard of Clairvaux was born to a noble family in France, yet at the age of 22 chose to turn his back on the path of wealth and power. He founded a monastery that was so strict that it ended up damaging its monks mental and physical health.  They were trying so hard to work their way into heaven, that it crushed them. By God’s grace, St. Bernard began looking for comfort in the Gospel. He is known for bringing sweet comfort to those crushed by the Law in his preaching and hymn writing (see the hymn “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded” LSB 450). See also, “Celebrating the Saints, pgs. 148-9) For more information check out this Luther Classical College article.

Wednesday: Commemoration of Samuel

We remember Samuel for his unique position of being a prophet, a priest, and the last ruler (a judge) over Israel. How does this three-fold office foreshadow Jesus’ work for us? For more resources check out this article on All the Household

Thursday: Holy Gospel – Luke 13:22-30

Many people think they have to work really hard in order to get into heaven. They strive to get in by their good works or holy living. Read John 14:6. Who is the “narrow door”? Read Ephesians 2:8. How are we saved? Jesus calls sinners to strive to enter the Kingdom through faith in Him and His hard work for our salvation.

Friday: Old Testament – Isaiah 66:18–23

God desires people from all nations and tongues to enter into His kingdom through faith in Jesus and His work. What is the sign that declares the Lord’s “glory among the nations”? Answer: the cross is where we see God’s glory most fully. That’s the sign that points to God’s mercy. It’s the place where Jesus did all the work of our salvation.
