Learning the Faith by Heart

Speaking, Praying, and Singing God’s Word Together
The Week of Nov 10 – Nov 17, 2024
Preparing for the Twenty-Sixth Sunday after Pentecost
Hymn of the Week: The Day is Surely Drawing Near (508)
Psalmody for Matins: Psalm 16 (Thurs)
GLCA Learn by Heart Hymn: Baptized into Your Name Most Holy (LSB 590, ss 1,4)
GLCA Catechism/Bible Verse Memory: Same as last week (The Power of Baptism)
Jr. Confirmation: What Baptism Indicates (“What does such baptizing indicate?”)
What does such baptizing with water indicate? It indicates that the Old Adam in us should by daily contrition and repentance be drowned and die with all sins and evil desires, and that a new man should daily emerge and arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever.
Where is this written? St. Paul writes in Romans chapter six: “We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” (Rom. 6:4)
Monday: Commemoration of St. Martin of Tours, Pastor Today we remember St. Martin of Tours, Pastor. If you’ve seen a plaque or coin with a soldier on a horse cutting his red cloak in half, then you have seen a picture of Martin of Tours. The story goes that Martin saw a man in need and cut his own cape in half so he could share it. He’s remembered for embodying the spirit of sacrifice and for humility. The LCMS Ministry to the Armed Forces gives out the St. Martin of Tours Medal each year. Say a prayer of thanksgiving for our servicemen and women who make big sacrifices for our freedom.
Tuesday: The Day is Surely Drawing Near (508) Our Hymn of the Day for Sunday describes the Last Day both as something to be feared for those who have rejected God’s invitation of grace, and as a treasured promise and goal for those who wait and pray in confident faith. How do you imagine most people think about the end of the world or the end of their lives? Or do they think about it at all? Why or why not? – LCMS Worship Hymn of the Day Study
Wednesday: Old Testament – Daniel 12:1–3 According to Dn. 12:2, how should a Christian (one whose “name is written in God’s book of life”) think about it? What is the treasured promise for those who wait for the Last Day trusting in Jesus for forgiveness?
Thursday: Holy Gospel – Mark 13:1–13 We are thinking of “end things” this week because we are near the end of another Church Year. The end of the Church Year reminds us that there will be an end to our world when Jesus comes back to “judge the living and the dead” (Apostles’ Creed). Jesus warns that some scary things that will happen before He comes back (vv. 7-8). But we don’t have to fear! We belong to Jesus. He already took the judgment we deserve on the cross! We’ve been cleansed by His blood. For those who trust in Him, His second coming is a source of true joy and hope! What promise does He give us in verse 13? How do we “endure”?
Friday: Epistle – Hebrews 10:11–25
How do we “draw near to God with a true heart”? How do we await His second coming in assurance?
