Speaking, Praying, and Singing God’s Word Together

The Week of Sept 22 –Sept 29, 2024

Preparing for the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels

Hymn of the Week: Lord God, to Thee We Give All Praise (522)

GLCA Learn by Heart Hymn: Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word (655)

Catechism Memory: Holy Baptism Institution (Matt. 28:19)

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” – Matthew 28:19

Bible Verse Memory: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” – Matthew 7:7-8

Monday: Catechism – The Sign of the Holy Cross

The sign of the holy cross is the oldest symbol of Christianity. No other symbol represents more clearly that Jesus Christ the crucified is the object of our faith and worship. The sign of the cross is first made upon a Christian at his baptism. Turn to page 268 in your hymnals. What does receiving the sign of the holy cross symbolize? What does that sign “mark” you as? Christians make the sign of the holy cross upon their bodies to because they belong to ____________.

Tuesday: Introit – Psalm 103:20-22

How do you picture angels? Do they look like the cute 2nd graders with their halos from the Christmas play? Or are they – as God’s Word pictures them – fierce, mighty warriors charged by God to serve and protect His people? How does Psalm 103:20-21 describe them? What is a “host”?

Wednesday: Old Testament – Daniel 10:10–14; 12:1–3

One of God’s “mighty warriors who do God’s word” is Michael, whose name means, “who is like God” in Hebrew.  St. Michael is one of the “chief commanding officers” of God’s army (His “heavenly host”), who engages in heavenly combat to aid in victory for God’s people (10:13-21).  How might having this picture of angels bring comfort to you in a “time of trouble”.

Thursday: Holy Gospel –Luke 10:17–20

When Jesus says, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven,” (vs. 18) it is in response to the disciples’ preaching the Lord’s Word. Why would the proclamation of the Gospel silence the devil? (Hint: on the cross, Jesus took all of Satan’s accusations against us on Himself).

Friday: First Reading – Revelation 12:7–12

It is Michael and his angels who prevail over the dragon and his angels in the great heavenly war, casting the devil to earth and delivering God’s people from the accusations of Satan.  Read verse 11 closely. How did Michael and the angels defeat Satan? How is Satan defeated today?
