Bible Verse Memory: “Jesus said, “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.’” – John 15:26

Monday: Catechism – The Lord’s Prayer in the Liturgy

            Jesus’ catechesis concerning the Lord’s Prayer indicates that it is the fountain and source of all the Church’s prayers. (Lutheran Catechesis Series by Peter Bender). “When you pray,” He taught His disciples, “say, ‘Our Father who art in heaven…’” Think about the variety of settings in which the Lord’s Prayer is used. For example, in the liturgy for Holy Baptism, when the Christian rises in the morning and before he goes to bed… Where else is it used?

Tuesday: Old Testament – Ezekiel 37:1-14

             How is Pentecost related to creation? How is it related to the New Creation? How does God give life to man? How does He give new life to man?

Wednesday: Second Reading – Acts 2:1-21

What did the Holy Spirit cause the apostles to do, and what did the Holy Spirit bring about through this in their hearers? What is the central miracle, or powerful working of God, at Pentecost? Where does it continue? See Mark 16:15–16 and Rom. 1:16.

Thursday: Holy Gospel – John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15

            Why is it to our benefit that Jesus ascended to the right hand of the Father? What did Jesus promise the Holy Spirit would do upon His sending? Can you make a list of the things the Holy Spirit does?

Friday: Hymn of the Day for Pentecost – Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord (497)             Luther writes that the Holy Spirit sanctifies the whole Christian Church and keeps it in the one true faith.  What does “sanctify” mean to you in the context of Luther’s meaning? What is the “service” in stanza 3 we are “to abide” in as individuals and as a corporate body? Abiding in the Spirit’s service can be complicated by daily trials that confront us and by our own inabilities and weaknesses. Can you recognize your trials and weaknesses and list them? – LCMS Worship Hymn of the Day Study, pg. 28

Catechism Memory: Review the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven,

hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth

as it is in heaven;

Give us this day our daily bread;

And forgive us our trespasses

                        As we forgive those who trespass against us;

And lead us not into temptation,

But deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom

            And the power and the glory

Forever and ever. Amen.
