What does this mean?

We pray in this petition that our Father in heaven would not…those who sin against us.

Bible Verse Memory: “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” – Ephesians 4:32

Monday: Catechism – Matthew 18:21-22

People cannot live in peace with one another for long unless they forgive one another. How do both the failure to forgive and the failure to receive forgiveness burden us? Read Matthew 18:21-35. In view of how richly and fully God has forgiven us, how does He want His forgiveness to change the way we live with others? – 2017 Small Catechism with Explanation, pg. 264.

Tuesday: Feast of St. Joseph, Guardian of Jesus – Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23

Prayer: Almighty God, from the house of Your servant David You raised up Joseph to be the guardian of Your incarnate Son and the husband of His mother, Mary. Grant us grace to follow the example of this faithful workman in heeding Your counsel and obeying Your commands; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Wednesday: “Seeing Is Not Believing” Lenten Sermon Series – Mark 15:15-32

We wouldn’t mind seeing a little swagger in the way that our Lord deals with Pilate and especially with Caiaphas and the other bullies on the Sanhedrin. We love to cheer for the underdog who comes out on top. We love it when he makes good on his promise to “show them”. What does Jesus show Pilate, the guards, the Sanhedrin, and the crowds instead?  Instead? What does this show us about who God is?

Thursday: Holy Gospel –  John 12:14-15

Jesus, who gently held children on His lap, gently touched the wounds of the sick and gently welcomed the tears of the grieving, now gently goes to the cross. Jesus, who as true God has almighty power, chose to be like a gentle lamb led to slaughter. Through Jesus’ life of gentleness comes the gift of salvation. What else does Jesus’ gentleness mean for us? Read Matthew 11:28-30.

Friday: Epistle – Philippians 2:5-11

Although Jesus is fully God, He does not count equality with God “a thing to be grasped.” Instead, out of His great love for sinners, He “lets go of” those divine attributes that could have spared Him the disgrace of the cross. Read verse 9. Why does this act of humiliation result in the “bestowal” of the name that is above all names. Hint: what does the name Jesus mean? How is Jesus’ death his “living up to His name”? Read or sing LSB 444.

Catechism Memory: The Lord’s Prayer – Fifth Petition and Explanation

And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.

What does this mean?

We pray in this petition that our Father in heaven would not look at our sins, or deny our prayer because of them. We are neither worthy of the things for which we pray, nor have we deserved them, but we ask that He would give them all to us by grace, for we daily sin much and surely deserve nothing but punishment. So we too will sincerely forgive and gladly do good to those who sin against us.
